Understanding Compatibility: Why Properly Matching Components Matters
One of the most common misconceptions about RV HVAC systems is that certain (or all) components are universally interchangeable. In reality, many components need to work within specific system requirements.
Replacing one part does not always mean replacing others, but compatibility should be verified before purchasing new components.
Quick AnswerModern RV HVAC components are not always interchangeable. Before replacing any component, it is important to verify that all connected components are compatible with one another. |
RV AC Compatibility Checklist
Before ordering a replacement part or putting together a whole new system, consider the following:
1. Is my system ducted or non-ducted?
This can affect compatiblity with rooftop units, ceiling assemblies, control boxes, and thermostats.
2. Is my system single or multi-zone?
Some thermostats, ceiling assemblies, and control boxes only support specific zone configurations.
Check:
- Existing thermostat settings
- Number of controlled areas
- Current control box capabilities
3. Will my existing thermostat work?
Compatibility may depend on:
- Control box
- Rooftop unit generation
- Zone configuration
- Heat functions
- And more
Remember that two visually identical thermostats may support completely different functions.
4. Does my system require a control box?
Some rooftop units or ceiling assemblies include integrated control boxes while others require a separate one to be added during installation. At RV Products Shop, we list all required components on each Furrion rooftop unit listing.
Controllers need to match:
- Thermostat
- Rooftop unit
- Zone setup
- Additional functions (such as heating or other smart features)
5. Do I need supplemental heating?
If you frequently travel or camp during the spring or fall seasons, you may want to consider a heat pump or heat strip. These supplemental heating options can help cut energy costs by reducing propane usage. It is important to remember that these options are NOT meant to completely replace a furnace in temperatures below ~40°F.
If you exclusively travel during the summer, heating options may not be a priority. In this case, you may decide to choose an AC only system.
6. Do I need to replace more than one component?
Changing one component can sometimes affect others, especially when replacing the rooftop unit.
For example, replacing a rooftop unit may require also replacing:
- Thermostat
- Control box
- Ceiling assembly
- Other accessories
7. What type of refrigerant does my rooftop unit use?
Due to updates from the EPA on refrigeration requirements, compatibility has become even more confusing. As of 1/1/2026, manufacturers are no longer permitted to produce or sell products containing R410A, which has been the industry standard for many years. Most RV HVAC manufacturers have switched to R32 refrigerant, which has different safety requirements. Some companies have designed their updated rooftop units to be backwards compatible with R410A components, while others have decided to keep all components separated by refrigerant type.
This change may affect the compatibility of all system components. When replacing or upgrading any part of your system, it is important to verify which refrigerant type the component was designed for so you can be confident when making upgrades or replacements.

Why Compatibility Matters
Many replacement issues are caused by a compatibility issue rather than a defective component. A few extra minutes spent on verifying compatibility can save hours of troubleshooting as well as costly returns and replacements.
Next Steps
If you feel comfortable, you can begin comparing systems. To make it easier to choose the correct components the first time, we have included a compatibility section on all of our rooftop unit product pages. There you can find a list of all required components with links to each compatible product in our store.
